💎 Core Formation
A core is the internal nexus of your power within the System. It's where mana lives, where skills draw their fuel, and where cultivation begins in earnest. Cores don't form on command. They crystallize involuntarily when the conditions inside you reach critical mass.
The Resonance Saturation Model
The System tracks an invisible internal metric for every inducted individual: resonance saturation. Think of it as a vessel filling up inside you. Every skill use, every ability activation, every moment of genuine comprehension adds to the fill level, but only if it aligns with your natural resonance.
The Rules
- High alignment = fast fill. Skills that match your soul's natural resonance fill the vessel quickly. Techniques feel intuitive, almost familiar, like you're remembering rather than learning.
- Low alignment = a trickle. Fighting against your resonance is possible, but it's slow, uncomfortable, and produces conflicting noise that delays crystallization.
- Comprehension beats repetition. Understanding why a power works accelerates saturation far more than grinding it a thousand times.
- Crystallization is involuntary. It happens at critical mass, triggered by a breakthrough moment: a flash of understanding, a life-or-death trial, an emotional peak. You cannot force it.
- The symptoms are physical. Skills begin feeling unnervingly natural. Warmth or pressure builds in the chest. Then, when critical mass hits, the core forms in a visceral event the cultivator cannot ignore.
Core Attributes
Every core develops two attributes that define the character of its power. These are not chosen. They emerge from how the power is used, understood, and cultivated.
Two people with the same elemental core are not the same if their attributes develop differently. A fire mage who leans Combustion is all burst damage and explosive devastation. One who leans Intensity is a slow, deep burn that melts through armor over time. Same element. Completely different fighters.
Training focus, combat style, and comprehension breakthroughs all influence which attribute develops faster. Over time, most cultivators lean into one attribute more heavily than the other, though the second never disappears entirely.
Core attributes are felt, not displayed on a stat screen. You know an attribute is growing because the power changes in practice: hits land differently, fields behave differently, the core's output shifts in texture and quality.
Universal Mana Skills
At induction, before any core forms, the System grants every individual three raw, untyped mana abilities. Not spells. Barely-controlled mana shoves: the crudest possible tools to give 8 billion civilians an outlet for their new energy.
Mana Push
Project mana outward from your hands. Raw, unformed force.
Your resonance colors the output. Fire-resonant: it comes out hot. Gravity-resonant: things get heavier. Shadow-resonant: the push dims the light around it.
Mana Reinforce
Channel mana inward to harden or strengthen your body.
Iron: skin hardens. Rage: pain fades, strength surges. Beast: senses sharpen. Nature: you feel rooted, stable.
Mana Sense
Feel mana in the environment. Passive awareness.
Nature-resonant feels the living things. Shadow-resonant feels the dark corners. Entropy-resonant feels what's breaking down.
These skills are universal, temporary, and blunt. They exist so nobody is standing around with a full gas tank and no ignition.
You don't choose what your mana does. Your resonance chooses for you. The first time you use Mana Push and fire licks off your fingertips, that's not a decision you made. That's your soul showing you what it's made of.
Resonance Coloring Over Time
As the tutorial progresses and universal skills get used repeatedly, the resonance coloring intensifies:
- Early tutorial: Mana Push comes out with slight warmth. Could be fire, could be light, could be nothing.
- Mid tutorial: Mana Push is clearly producing flame. Not controlled, not shaped, but unmistakably fire.
- Late tutorial: Mana Push has evolved into a proto-fireball. Rough, crude, but recognizable as a fire skill in embryo.
This is the System's discovery engine at work. By the end of the tutorial, everyone knows their resonance whether they intended to learn it or not.
Post-Tutorial Skill Evolution
The universal skills don't vanish after class selection. They evolve:
- Mana Push becomes the foundation for your first real offensive skill.
- Mana Reinforce becomes your first defensive or enhancement skill.
- Mana Sense becomes passive awareness filtered through your class and affinity.
The training wheels become the frame of the bicycle. Nothing is wasted.
