On an ordinary Thursday, the System arrived and the world ceased to exist. What replaced it was wilderness, a tutorial that didn't care whether you were ready, and an unforgiving system ushering in a new age in humanity.

Archie McDonald wasn't the obvious choice to be a hero. At thirty-one years old, and not particularly powerful, the odds were never in his favor. What he has is decent instincts, terrible social awkwardness, a head full of patterns, and the particular stubbornness of a man who decides early that losing people close to him is not an option. He adapts. He gets stronger. He keeps the group moving when staying still would be easier.

And something has noticed.

It weaves its way through dust motes and light. It appears in moments when the choice matters, and then vanishes before he can look at it directly. It has never spoken, but it has never been wrong.

The tutorial ends. The real tests are just beginning, and the new world doesn't care.

Beyond the threshold, the ruins of civilization are filling back in, and nothing filling the vacuum is friendly. The System has layers no one has reached yet, or has even dreamed possible. And waiting at the edge of everything Archie thought he understood about himself is a bond that will change what he is, not just what he can do.

Far away, in a place that doesn't exist on any map of this world, someone is looking for the man who disappeared.
